Lorem ipsum is scrambled placeholder text used to fill a design before the real copy is ready. It begins "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" and looks like Latin but is essentially nonsense, derived from a passage by the Roman writer Cicero with words altered. This generator produces it by paragraphs, sentences, words, or bytes, as plain text, HTML, or Markdown.
Why designers use it
The whole point of placeholder text is that it is meaningless. If you fill a mockup with real, readable copy, people start reading and critiquing the words instead of evaluating the layout, typography, and spacing. Lorem ipsum's pronounceable, Latin-like rhythm mimics the visual texture of natural language without pulling focus, so the design can be judged on its own terms.
Why fake Latin instead of random letters?
Lorem ipsum has a realistic distribution of word and sentence lengths, so it flows and wraps like genuine prose. A block of random characters or repeated "test test test" would not, making the mockup look unnatural. The familiar, neutral appearance is exactly why it has been the publishing industry's standard dummy text since the 1500s.
Do not ship it to production
Placeholder text is a design aid, not real content. Leaving lorem ipsum on a live page looks unprofessional, confuses visitors, and offers nothing to search engines, which value unique, meaningful copy.
