How to convert kilograms to pounds

One kilogram is exactly equal to 2.2046226218 pounds. To convert any weight from kilograms (kg) to pounds (lbs), you multiply the number of kilograms by this factor. The relationship is fixed and defined by international agreement, so the conversion is exact - there is no rounding or regional variation involved, only the number of decimal places you choose to display.

The formula is simply:

pounds = kilograms × 2.20462

For example, to convert 70 kg to pounds: 70 × 2.20462 = 154.32 lbs. To go the other way, from pounds back to kilograms, you divide by the same factor (or multiply by its reciprocal, 0.45359237): 154.32 ÷ 2.20462 = 70 kg. The converter above does both directions live - type into either field and the other updates instantly, and you can pick how many decimals you need.

Worked examples

  • 1 kg = 2.20 lbs
  • 5 kg = 11.02 lbs
  • 10 kg = 22.05 lbs
  • 60 kg = 132.28 lbs
  • 75 kg = 165.35 lbs
  • 100 kg = 220.46 lbs

Kilograms vs. pounds: what's the difference?

The kilogram is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI) and is used by the vast majority of countries for everyday weighing. The pound (more precisely the international avoirdupois pound) is a unit of mass in the imperial and US customary systems, still in common use in the United States and, for body weight and some everyday purposes, the United Kingdom. Since 1959 the pound has been defined officially as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, which is why the conversion factor never changes.

Strictly speaking both kilograms and pounds measure mass, not weight (weight is a force). In everyday language the two terms are used interchangeably, and on the surface of the Earth the distinction doesn't affect the conversion - so for cooking, shipping, fitness, and travel you can treat this as a straightforward weight conversion.

When you'll need this conversion

Converting between kilograms and pounds comes up constantly once you cross between metric and imperial contexts:

  • Fitness and weightlifting. Gym plates in the US are marked in pounds, while barbell standards, international competitions, and most training programs use kilograms. Lifters routinely convert their numbers between the two.
  • Travel and luggage. Airline baggage limits are often quoted in kg (e.g. 23 kg checked, 7 kg carry-on); if you're used to pounds, you need the conversion to avoid excess-baggage fees.
  • Health and medicine. Body weight is recorded in kilograms on most medical charts and in pounds on US scales; medication dosing is frequently calculated per kilogram of body weight.
  • Cooking and shipping. Recipes, parcel weights, and product specs move between the two systems depending on where they were written.

Quick mental-math shortcut

If you don't have a calculator handy, a fast approximation is to double the kilograms and add 10%. For 70 kg: double to 140, add 10% (14) to get about 154 lbs - within a fraction of a pound of the exact answer. To estimate the reverse (pounds to kilograms), halve the pounds and subtract about 10%. These shortcuts are accurate enough for everyday estimates, but use the converter above whenever you need a precise figure.
