Frequently Asked Questions
- What is ideal body weight?
- Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimated weight range considered healthy for a given height. Multiple formulas exist — this calculator shows five of the most widely used, all giving slightly different results. No single formula is definitively correct.
- Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
- No single formula is universally most accurate. The Devine formula is most commonly used in clinical settings (for drug dosing). The healthy BMI range method is most scientifically validated. Using the average of multiple formulas is a reasonable approach.
- Does ideal weight differ by gender?
- Yes. Men and women have different body composition at the same height. Women naturally carry more essential body fat. All five formulas used here account for gender differences.
- Does frame size affect ideal weight?
- Yes. People with larger bone structures naturally weigh more. A large-framed person may be at their ideal weight at a BMI of 25, while a small-framed person may be healthy at a lower BMI. Adjust by ±10% for frame size.
- Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
- Not exactly. Ideal weight formulas give a single target number. Healthy weight is better expressed as a range — the BMI 18.5–24.9 range. Both concepts are useful but neither captures full health complexity.
