How to calculate a tip

A tip is a percentage of the bill, so the math is simply tip = bill * (percentage / 100), and the total is the bill plus that tip. For a $50 bill at 18%, the tip is $9 and the total is $59. How much should you tip?

Tipping norms vary by country and service, but in the United States the common guidelines are:

• Restaurants (sit-down): 15% to 20%, with 18% to 20% considered standard for good service.
• Bars: about $1 to $2 per drink, or 15% to 20% of the tab.
• Food delivery: 10% to 15%, often with a small minimum of a few dollars.
• Taxis and rideshare: 10% to 15%.
• Counter service and takeout: optional; round up or tip a little for extra help.

Tip before or after tax?

Strictly, a tip is for the service, so it is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. In practice many people tip on the post-tax total because it is simpler and the difference is small. Either is acceptable; tipping on the pre-tax amount is the technically correct and slightly more economical choice.

Splitting the bill

For a group, you can split the total evenly or by what each person ordered. Even splitting divides the grand total (bill plus tip) by the number of diners. The calculator handles both, and the rounding option is handy when you want each share to land on a clean number. Note that tipping customs differ worldwide: in many countries service is included or tipping is minimal, so adjust when travelling.
